Description

The purpose of this training is to increase one's knowledge, awareness and skills in identifying students at risk of suicide and how to assist students in need of help. The training discusses both the school and school staff roles in youth suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention. Content includes policies and procedures; skills for identifying, exploring and intervening in signs of suicidal thinking; communication with students' families about depression and suicide; laws and ethics around confidentiality and reporting; and how to support other youth after a suicide loss. The training is recognized by the Suicide Prevention Resource Center's Best Practice Registry. This is an approved course that meets the requirement for a continuing certificate or the professional certificate (WAC 181-79A-221) for School Counselors, Psychologists, Nurses, and Social Workers. Upon completion, participants will be able to: (1) identify their school's policies about suicide prevention and intervention and how they affect their work; (2) identify signs of adolescent depression; (3) identify youth at risk of suicide based on recent experiences, statements, and other warning signs; (4) explore the level of suicide risk with an adolescent in crisis; (5) make appropriate referrals for youth and families in crisis; and (6) provide postvention support after the loss of a young person to suicide.
