Description

Come spend two nights (March 20th - March 22nd, 2017) in Holden Village with Renee Schneider, a former Disney artist and elementary teacher who runs a non-profit in Orlando, Florida for underprivileged youth (ArtWorks Orlando.) We will have sessions for elementary teachers about integrating visual arts with reading, and for secondary teachers about creative art projects and careers in the arts. There will be other sessions provided by local High School Art Teacher Sue Clouse, and the Holden staff, including the directors (Chuck Hoffman & Peg Carlson-Hoffman), a potter, a fiber artist/weaver (Karol McCracken), and the arts lead (Emily Atkinson - a veteran secondary art teacher); and by the current Artists in Residence, which include a fiber artist (Carrie Larson), a writer/comedian (Hal Baum), and a 3 member band (The Living Arrows.) Most sessions will be hands-on, and all materials are provided.  (Note that much of the funding for this event, including half of the lodging fees, and all of the supplies and the presenter's fees, are covered by an anonymous grant.  Thank you, generous donor!)

Event Notes

There will be an Idea Share, so please bring a thumb drive with you with a successful lesson plan, ideas, tools, etc. to share with the group. Images of your own or student work are encouraged.  Be aware of copyright, as we will be copying these for all participants.

Holden Village is a remote mountain village high in the Cascades. Registration fees include a round trip boat ride from Chelan or Fields Point Landing to Lucerne (the stop for Holden) on the Lady of the Lake, lodging and meals in Holden, all sessions, and materials. You can bring money for the Holden Store, or if you want to buy extra materials or make more projects. Parking fees apply at both landings, so carpooling is encouraged.

There is no cell service at Holden, and internet access is limited, so be aware of that when registering. Details about lodging will be emailed to you upon registration. Holden is 4 hours from the nearest medical attention, although we do have medics on staff. If you have dietary restrictions, please let us know so that we can accommodate you. Our facilities use nuts, gluten, etc,, but we will do our best to create tasty meals that you can eat while you are here.To attend you will have to catch the Lady of the Lake boat on Monday, March 20th, at 10:00 am from Chelan or 10:50 am from Fields Point Landing.  You will then spend Monday and Tuesday nights at Holden Village, and will return by boat to Fields Point Landing at 3:10 or Chelan at 4:00 pm on Wednesday.  Please visit www.holdenvillage.org if you want further information about our Village.  Note that as this is an educational workshop, you are not required to attend any religious services, but you are more than welcome.

You should receive an email a couple of weeks before the event with a list of items to bring to Holden, weather updates, and other pertinent information (especially helpful if you've never been to Holden before!)

Anyone interested in coming to Holden earlier (the Friday before) or staying longer (the Friday or Monday after), can email arts@holdenvillage.org for how to do that.

Be aware that since cell phones do not work at Holden, Emily Atkinson cannot be reached via cell phone most of the time.  Email is the best method of communication.
