Description
Our learning team will focus on building and sustaining a democratic classroom within which students learn the 4 C’s of 21st Century skills: collaboration, communication, creativity (and innovation), and critical thinking. The outcome is twofold: students will become civically engaged and empathetic global citizens inside and outside of the classroom, and educators will build relationships that empower student learning.
Our work as a team will include:
Generating Class Agreements and keeping them alive and ever stronger all year.
Class Meetings: a weekly forum in which students leaders and Educator leader build restorative practices and authentic relationships.
Community Building to create a powerful team in which all students are integral to the whole.
Class Jobs: to create a sense of belonging, ownership and responsibility of the learning community.
Processes for Mutual Respect and Structures for a Culture of Equity: to move beyond reward & punishment and to learn to use natural & logical consequences, encouragement rather than praise, and to build on the positive while minimizing mistakes– methodologies creating equity and inclusion--a “power with” rather than “power over” relationship.
The outcome of our work will be to make recommendations about specific Democratic practices that should be implemented across all classrooms at IMS, including timelines and training as necessary.
