Description

School districts across the country are working to shift mathematics instruction away from teaching students to become answer-getters through rote memorization to developing thoughtful problem solvers. This is a big change away from the way math class looked when we were growing up and it requires a deep understanding of what effective mathematics teaching looks like. In this session, participants will learn how to support teachers in shifting their practice to create more student-centered learning that emphasizes sense-making and promotes the development of a robust understanding of mathematics. We will explore NCTM's 8 Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices as well as the Teaching for Robust Understanding framework from the Mathematics Assessment Project.
