Description
The SSC Series is primarily developed for the SSC School Psychologist and SSC Counselor. With the exception of Session One (Dyslexia), the focus will the on Social Emotional Learning (SEL). This will include a guest speaker, Ron Hertel from OSPI who works on this very topic. Anthony Brock will also lead us in understanding and implementing Restorativee Justice/Discipline. Additionally we will look at Morning Meetings as it aligns with SEL. In the last two sessions we will first turn our attention to promoting self awareness for all staff and how to accomplish that. Finally, we will explore mindfulness/vicarious trauma and how our awareness plus interventions will help us and the people around us.
Event Notes
November 14th: Discussion with Ken Turcotte about Dyslexia. Providing information about Dyslexia and how to communicate with staff and families.
January 9th: Ron Hertel, Program Supervisor for Compassionate Schools/SEL Program Supervisor. Focusing on SEL within the state of Washington.
February 20th: Anthony Brock, Assistant Principal at Roosevelt with M.Ed. in Leadership will present. The topic is Restorative Justice/Discipline.
March 13th: Kim Swanson, M.Ed in School Psychology/Administrator Certification and SSC School Psychologist/Counselor will present. Morning Meetings for Students in Classroom. How does SEL affect how they are done.
April 10th: Presentation by Heather Kazda, School Social Worker,School Counselor. Participants will learn strategies for identifying and working effectively with students who have experienced trauma, through the lens of the the polyvagal theory, a newer understanding of the human nervous systems and it's adaptations to threatening experiences. Emphasis will be on utilizing your own physical responses and nervous system as the primary tools for creating attuned relationships that can be the key to effective classroom management and student growth.
May 8th: Presentation by Heather Kazda. Using the lens of polyvagal theory, a newer understanding of the human nervous system and it's adaptations, we will explore our own experiences of vicarious traumatization and burnout that can result from working with highly traumatized populations and overtaxed systems. In this supportive space, mindfulness techniques for self care and self regulation will be offered and practiced. Emphasis will be on deepening self awareness of our own nervous system patterns and ways to compassionately and effectively reduce physical stress and meet our own needs throughout the work day.
