The Effective Learning Environments Observation Tool (ELEOT) is an observers tool for examining and rating a classroom based on Seven Environments. The environments are: equitable learning, high expectations, supportive learning, active learning, progress monitoring and feedback, well-managed, and digital learning. The tool is used to examine what students are doing in a classroom and the learning environment in which they are learning. Each of the modules has a "Why It Matters" description of the module, what one needs to understand about the module, what learners are doing, and what observers are doing as they observe. Each module is discussed by participant by using the following questions as a guide.

2. What are you doing in your classroom right now that reflects this standard?

3. Do you see ideas that you could add to your classroom to even more completely approach this standard?

4. Discuss the verbs that describe the learners and the observers. What do you notice.

5. What are your “take aways” from this discussion.

After a thorough discussion of each environment, a ratings guide is used to rate four film clips of actual classroom instruction that are viewed and rated by the participants and then the true rating is given. 

At the end of the course is an assessment so that participants can see how much they learned and understood about the environments.
