All I Need to Know to Understand Climate Science I Learned in High School Chemistry

Tue, March 19 2019 8:00 AM - 2:30 PM

Administered by NWESD

Presenters

  • Alexander Gagnon

Description

University of Washington College of Oceanography professors and graduate students will provide learning experiences aligned to introductory oceanography courses and current research practices.  Participants will learn current climate science taught at UW and build a spectrophotometric device, modeled after those used in current ocean research, to measure pH. Each particpant will take home a device which could possibly built by students in their science classroom.

Participants will

  • deepen their understanding of the chemistry and related data regarding the increase in atmospheric CO2
  • deepen their understanding of the chemistry and related data collection of the interaction of atmospheric CO2 and ocean chemistry
  • build & use technology to measure pH using spectrophotometircs

Target Audience: High school chemistry teachers and other science teachers with chemistry backgrounds.

ClimeTime is a statewide initiative of the Washington Governor, the Washington State Legislature, OSPI, and the Association of Educational Service Districts (AESD). Participation is paid for by the Washington State Legislature’s 2018 Climate Science Proviso. Districts will be reimbursed by Northwest Educational Service District for substitute release time.
