1st Reading Assignment – due 4/9. You will need the book for this study (hard copy or electronic version, see below). Please read chapters 1-3 prior to our first meeting.
Necessary Conditions equips and helps teachers consider three big elements of secondary mathematical pedagogy:
- Academic Safety: Design classroom experiences that increase engagement and build all students’ identities as mathematicians
- Quality Tasks: Create dynamic, high-quality lessons that include meaningful, efficient assessment.
- Effective Facilitation: Facilitate routines and discussions that increase all students’ access to conceptual mathematics
This course will consist of 5 "Zoom" meetings (2 hours each) plus reflection and connection in an on-line learning environment between sessions.

“Initiatives aren’t pedagogy. Textbooks aren’t pedagogy. Even taking individual sections within this book is insufficient pedagogy. Put it all together, though? Now, that’s pedagogy.” – Geoff Krall
“Geoff Krall's valuable new book Necessary Conditions gets down to the ‘nuts and bolts.’ It’s not just about theory. It offers detailed strategies and ideas to create the three conditions teachers need to establish before students to begin to see themselves as mathematicians.” – Michelle Russell, MiddleWeb.com
