Description

Full-day kindergarten is an important element of our state's strategy for improving student outcomes and closing the achievement gap. Much happens during the kindergarten year that makes it special, including welcoming families into the K-12 system, facilitating student success in a developmentally appropriate, standards-based environment, and forging "school readiness" partnerships with the early learning community. Celebrate K! is offering three days of content targeted specially for Kindergarten.

In the Operations and Algebraic Thinking module, participants develop an understanding of how children connect different meanings, interpretations and relationships with the operations of addition and subtraction. Participants will study how children progress in their algebraic understanding along a learning trajectory through an immersion into the Learning Pathways of Numeracy document. Through interactive, hands-on activities, participants will gain resources that can be implemented in the classroom to develop a child’s algebraic thinking.
In this session, learn how to plan and organize play centers in the classroom. Participants will explore how play evolves over the course of a year. Participants will also learn methods for facilitating and enhancing play through teaching children to be purposeful about their center choices.
Close reading and vocabulary acquisition are terms that have gained traction is recent years, but what do they look like inside a classroom? Participants in this session will engage in meaningful discussions and explore strategies to improve reading comprehension and vocabulary acquisition while looking at close reading and vocabulary techniques in this fast-paced, interactive workshop that is grounded in the Washington State Learning Standards.
Participants will deepen their understanding of the Common Core Content and practice math standards through the Counting and Cardinality domain. We will look at how to engage students in mathematical tasks through play-based learning. Intentional connections will be made to WaKIDS through videos and hands-on experiences.
In this interactive session, participants will explore block play and the connection to STEAM and 21st century skills needed for success in life. The educational value of blocks will be promoted by identifying what children learn through block play; outlining guiding practices for setting up a block center; defining the stages of block play and the connections to State standards and assessments.
This session will focus on the Toddlers 2 Teens program that helps children understand that feelings are inevitable and, most importantly, that finding a way to deal with those feelings is what helps move us forward instead of getting into trouble. Otus and the Wise Guys assist parents, teachers and other care providers in the process of boosting children’s emotional literacy level and enhancing their social-emotional competence overall.
