Description
This class is for the educator who is working with children with sensory issues. It is not meant to replace the services provided by occupational therapists or physical therapists who work in the districts. My intention is to educate teachers so they can be sensitive and aware of the needs of children. Upon completion of this class, you should understand sensory challenges and patterns so that you will have more effective strategies to use in the classroom. To provide optimum services to children, team members need to collaborate and work together. This is especially true for children with sensory differences.
This first session will review the sensory system, describe the different senses and introduce the categories of sensory challenges which make it difficult for adults and children to function in their home and school lives. The instructor will review the diagnostic categories of children who often have sensory differences. Class participants will have an opportunity to explore their own sensory system and identify their own sensitivities and preferences.
