Description
Washington’s leave laws are about to get a whole lot more complex and demanding of employers, including public schools. Most urgently, school districts need to learn what to do to comply with the new Washington State paid sick leave law, which goes into effect January 1, 2018. Also, this last summer, Washington passed one of the country’s most generous paid family leave laws, the initial phase of which goes into effect a year later, on January 1, 2019.
Like the Federal Family Medical Leave Act (“FMLA”) and the existing Washington Family Leave Act, the new family leave law entitles eligible employees to take up to 12 weeks of time off for certain qualifying events, such as an employee’s own illness, the illness of a spouse or family member, the birth or placement of a child, and military exigencies. In addition, Washington joins the ranks of four other states and the other Washington (D.C., that is), to require that this sort of leave be paid, starting in 2020.
On February 16th, attorney Tracy M. Miller, of Karr Tuttle Campbell, will provide an overview of the upcoming changes to State law and tips to coordinate with paid leave laws, other forms of protected leave, attendance policies, and collective bargaining agreements. She will also provide tips about using these leaves in conjunction with other forms of reasonable accommodation of employees with disabilities. Please join Tracy and your colleagues for this informative and important session.
