Description
People are ambivalent about change and highly sensitive to attempts of persuasion. As a result of being told what to do, they often respond with resistance and denial. That is where Motivational Interviewing is different. Rather than probing with questions to extract information for diagnosis or management, Motivational Interviewing seeks to gain the student’s/client’s perspective. It is particularly effective for those who are not interested in change or are considering change but are not yet ready to commit. Motivational Interviewing helps us facilitate communication to enhance and elicit natural indicators of readiness to change by first reducing resistance and resolving ambivalence.
