Description

Read alouds provide unique opportunities for learners to utilize their diverse prior experiences to deepen their understanding of their world, natural science and math while fostering emergent literacy skills, and positive social behavior. Using children’s literature as a source of inspiration, teachers will learn to support key conceptual development by utilizing the context already embedded in diverse children’s literature as part of an equitable classroom practice.

  • Learn to engage my students in activities that develop richer experiences and conceptual understanding of early literacy and mathematics (STEM) through role play and read alouds.

  • Embed cross-curricular concept development through children’s books, with examples from specific titles that connect books to students’ lives and leverage the brain’s memory systems and information processing structure.

  • Learn to incorporate three-act tasks and early numeracy into classroom routines that develop students’ conceptual understanding.

Event Notes

This course will focus on cultivating a vibrant and productive view of mathematics/STEM for young children. We will share meaningful ways to engage children in mathematics/STEM through the everyday activity of reading aloud stories. When we approach children's literature with a conceptual lens, stories become an avenue for finding wonder and joy for mathematics/STEM. We will share a process for Finding the STEM children’s books, with examples from specific titles, and think together about how to open up opportunities to support young mathematicians/scientists as well as readers and writers.

Participation in this course qualifies teachers within Thurston County to apply to receive a classroom library of diverse books as part of the Tumwater Foundation's award of the Extending Story-time as an Equitable Practice grant. Contact jpartridge@esd113.org for more information.
