Description

Teaching students about sustainability and the environment has often been treated as an "extra", e.g. in the form of an after-school club, an advanced elective course, etc., instead of part of the curricula for all students. Clark County Green Schools has long been supporting schools in their green initiatives, often as after-school programs or activities to achieve certification via Washington Green Schools. Current efforts aim to help teachers and administrators learn practical tools to incorporate Environmental and Sustainability Education (ESE) into course curricula, specifically into STEM subjects via alignment with NGSS and Common Core math standards. Our course at the STEMtastic Summer Symposium will include basic information about the science behind environmental issues of focus in Washington State, STEM-focused program and activity offerings through Clark County Green Schools and other community partners, and general practices for talking about environmental issues within an NGSS context. Presenters will include Green Schools staff from Clark County Public Health, education staff from Waste Connections, and teachers from local schools who have actively and successfully integrated NGSS/Common Core-aligned ESE into their standard STEM curricula.
