5 Practices for Orchestrating Class Discussion
Administered by ESD 112

Description
Creating a classroom where mathematical discourse is the focal point of student learning can be both challenging and rewarding. This one-day workshop will focus on the five key practices from NCTM's 5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematical Discussions (Smith and Stein). The 5 Practices of Anticipating, Monitoring, Selecting, Sequencing, and Connecting provide an invaluable framework for planning activities to support mathematically productive discussions rooted in student thinking.
Chrissy Newell, with illustrative mathematics, will present this session, drawing examples from Open-Up Resources' grades 6-8 OER materials. The 5 practices framework will apply to all classrooms, so users and non-users of the freely available curriculum materials (and teachers outside of the middle school grades) are invited to attend.
