Description

The Standards for Mathematical Practice are an integral part of a student-centered mathematics classroom, but what do they look like in action in primary and elementary classrooms? In this highly interactive session, participants will engage in the practices as learners to experience them firsthand. They will then consider how these same practices can come to life in their own classrooms and how teachers can use them to develop richer and more meaningful mathematical experiences for their students. Special emphasis will be on developing a deeper understanding of what it means to reason abstractly and quantitatively, model with mathematics, look for and make use of structure, and look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. Participants will leave with lots of structures and routines they can use with their students to engage them in the mathematical practices and elevate their interest and curiosity in mathematics.
