Description
This 1-day, 6.5 contact hour workshop also includes a 30-minute pre-workshop video, which brings the session to a total of 7 hours of professional development. Also known as Workshop 1 or WS1, this session provides an in depth review of the first two elements of the PREPaRE model (Prevent and Reaffirm) as well as exploring the final element (Examine). Specifically, WS1 is designed to stimulate educator and safety professional thinking regarding ways that they can help to establish and sustain comprehensive school crisis preparedness protocols and better ensure safe school environments. WS1 is appropriate for school employed mental health professionals, administrators, safety and security professionals, teachers, law enforcement/school resource officers, and other staff who are (or will be) involved in school crisis preparedness efforts and serve on safety or crisis response teams.
WS1 emphasizes the unique needs and functions of school safety and crisis response teams. The curriculum asserts that these teams should be in line with traditional school protocols, laws, and the National Incident Management System and its Incident Command System. The workshop also reviews the important steps to be taken to develop cohesive and sustainable teams that integrate school personnel and community service provider roles. The PREPaRE model also aligns with a multitiered delivery system and builds on existing resources and programs, with particular emphasis on balancing physical and psychological safety. These efforts include developing a positive school climate, engaging multitiered supports to address student behavior and increase academic functioning, building student resilience, and ensuring all staff are trained in their respective crisis response duties. The workshop also addresses the necessary components to be included in a high quality Emergency Operations Plan (EOP). Finally, WS1 explores how to prepare for school crises by developing, exercising, and evaluating crisis preparedness plans.
