Description
This is a 3-day training for the OpenSciEd 6th grade instructional unit focusing on thermal energy titled, “How can we design a cup to keep a drink cold?” The OpenSciEd project provides curriculum that is free, coherent, rigorous, research-based, and which supports all students in meeting the vision for science literacy described in A Framework for K-12 Science Education and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). This particular session will focus on training participants in implementing high-leverage instructional routines and investigations to teach 6th grade unit which focuses on thermal energy by engaging students in a series of labs, by having them create and refine models to explain their understanding of the phenomenon, and finally by having them design, construct, test and revise their cup designs. Participants will receive a copy of the unit and supporting instructional materials that accompany the unit (a plethora of slides presentations, handouts, etc.). Lab materials to implement in the classroom will not be provided.
