Description
This is a 3-day training for the OpenSciEd 8h grade instructional unit focusing on sound titled, “How can we detect different sounds from a distance?” The OpenSciEd project provides curriculum that is free, coherent, rigorous, research-based, and which supports all students in meeting the vision for science literacy described in A Framework for K-12 Science Education and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). This particular session will focus on training participants in implementing the high-leverage instructional routines and conducting investigations to teach 8th grade unit which focuses on the phenomenon of traveling sound by engaging students in a series of labs, by having them create and refine models to explain their understanding of the phenomenon, and finally by having them construct an explanation for the interesting event they observe. Participants will receive a copy of the unit and supporting instructional materials that accompany the unit (a plethora of slides presentations, handouts, etc.). Lab materials to implement in the classroom will not be provided.
