Description

By the time a student graduates, nearly one entire school year of his or her academic career will have been taught by substitute teachers. With this perhaps startling statistic in mind, it's easy to see that substitute teachers must be more than babysitters; they must be effective educators.

Substitute teachers are critical to the success of our K–12 system. Substitutes are called in to work for short- and long-term assignments, to fill in for emergency absences, and to ensure that students still receive sound educational instruction when their regular teachers are participating in professional development.

What does it mean to be effective? It means being prepared, knowledgeable, and professional. It means being able to manage classroom behavior and provide stimulating instruction. It means communicating students' daily progress to the regular classroom teacher.
