Civil Rights and Nondiscrimination Law

Civil Rights and Nondiscrimination Law

Component 2 of the CCDEI Standards Initiative

Tue, August 24 2021 12:00 AM - Thu, June 30 2022 11:45 PM

Description

With the passage of Senate Bill 5044, beginning in the 2021-22 and every other year forward, districts must provide one professional learning day on Cultural Competency, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (CCDEI) training. A major component of advancing equity in education is ensuring that each and every student learns from well-prepared educators. As such a critical step in an educator’s preparation journey is their ability to demonstrate cultural responsiveness, and center diversity, equity, and inclusion in the ways they support their students. Statewide standards equip educators with the tools they need to do this.

The Cultural Competency Standards were created by the Washington State Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB) in response to direction from the Education Opportunity Gap Oversight and Accountability Committee (EOGOAC). These standards ensure that Washington State Educators develop and hone their cultural competence at each progressing level of the educator continuum (pre-service, induction, professional, and career). The standards demonstrate the state’s commitment to cultural responsiveness and to ensuring all educators are prepared to recognize diversity as an asset and build upon students’ diverse strengths.

This course is aligned to the Cultural Competency Standards found on the PESB CCDEI website for Component 2 and covers the following topics:

  1. Civil Rights Law
  2. Safe Schools (e.g. Bullying, Harassment)
