Description
Here’s what it is: A book study that focuses on shifting our mindset from traditional grading practices to those that bring accuracy to student assessment through a Standards-Referenced mindset. Grading From the Inside Out by Tom Schimmer proposes three elements that, when combined, will create a foundation that reshapes the grading paradigm. There will be 10 chapters of reading and discussions that will give answers to the following questions:
· How do we give students full credit for what they know?
· How do we redefine accountability?
· How will we re-purpose the role of homework?
Here’s why you should join us: Our PLC work next year sets the stage for a shift in mindset around our grading practices. Once we have defined our “Essential Standards,” we will work to develop common assessments that require alignment of our grading practices. Currently, many of us rely on traditional grading procedures that use extra credit, attendance, compliance, and other non-academic factors when assigning a grade. These factors distort our understanding and will interfere with our PLC work next year as we determine together whether students have learned what we wanted them to learn. The time is now to reform our grading practices and establish a “true north” based on “accuracy and confidence.” Join us if you’re interested in getting a jump-start on your grading mindset for next school year!
