Behavior is Communication: Addressing Severe Challenging Behaviors
Behavior is Communication: Addressing Severe Challenging Behaviors
Identifying students' use of behavior as communication
Presenters
- Flint Simonsen
Description
Addressing severe challenging behaviors (e.g., aggression, self-injury, environmental destruction), can be confusing and frustrating. This workshop will describe practical strategies for addressing complex challenging behaviors. Understanding behavior from “the student’s perspective” consistently leads to more effective management. The session will describe methods which have been demonstrated effective even for students with significant developmental disabilities or for students who are functionally non-verbal.
Event Notes
In this workshop:
1. Participants will gain tools for understanding complex challenging behaviors;
2. Participants will learn how to translate their understanding into effective behavior plans;
