Description

This course will continue to deepen your knowledge to implement in YOUR CLASSROOM following the introductory course of Structured Literacy and Science of Reading and Language Comprehension. We will continue to reflect upon philosophical beliefs of how students learn to read. Teachers will be provided classroom material to operate the Code Kaleidoscope.

The four sessions will include classroom practices and small group work sessions: 

  1. Phonemic and Phonological Awareness
  2. Graphemes and Orthographic Mapping
  3. Identification of student/teacher books
  4. Receive tips, resources and progress monitoring/assessments

Event Notes

Session 1:

Understand the difference between phonemic and phonological awareness, and how to support a child’s development of skills needed to access the Code Kaleidoscope.

Objectives

Session 2:

Learn how attaching graphemes to sounds, allows orthographic mapping, which promote students’ access of the Code Kaleidoscope.

  • Small group work session

Session 3:

Continue with orthographic mapping, to build automatic word recognition skills and fluency skills in reading and writing, which reinforces students’ access of the Code Kaleidoscope.

  • Continuation of Graphemes and Orthographic Mapping
  • Receive tips, resources and progress monitoring/assessments
  • Small group work session

Session 4:

Use the various aspects of the Code Kaleidoscope and Scarborough’s Rope for identification of text which provide student growth in reading and writing.
