Event Notes

Speaker Bio

Kody Russell is the Kitsap Strong ACEs & Resiliency Project Director and he is one of 25 Washington State certified trainers in a science curriculum that challenges our understanding of human behavior and many of the social and health challenges we see in our community. He is an engaging and entertaining presenter who uses storytelling and real life examples to help make sense of complex scientific information.

Kody has over ten years of experience working with children and families in the child welfare system who have experienced significant trauma and struggled with associated social and health problems; including mental health issues, substance use disorders, aggression, child abuse & neglect, anger, hostility, sexual behavior issues, homelessness, poverty, etc. Before being hired as the Kitsap Strong Project Director, Kody worked for the Department of Children & Family Services (DCFS) for over seven years as a Child Protective Services (CPS) Investigator, Department of Licensed Resources - Foster Home Licensor, and as a Family Team Decision Meeting Facilitator/Supervisor. Prior to working for DCFS, Kody was a supervisor at Ryther Child Center in Seattle, a behavioral rehabilitation center for “Sexually Aggressive Youth”.

Kody received his Bachelors in Psychology from Seattle University in 2000 and a Master’s in Social Work from Eastern Washington University in 2014. He uses his education and lived experience working with children and families through the child welfare system to add deep meaning and life to the science of trauma and resiliency.

Kitsap Strong:

Kitsap Strong is a network of community leaders collaboratively implementing a theory of community improvement grounded in the application of cutting-edge science with a focus on equity. Kitsap Strong members have a shared common agenda/goal to "Improve the well-being and educational attainment of Kitsap residents, through a focus on empowerment and equity, the prevention of ACEs, and the building of resilience."

Kitsap Strong was born out of the Kitsap Community Health Priorities Process (KCHP), where over 150 local leaders and community members came together and identified ACEs as a major health, social, and economic concern in our community. These leaders also agreed that no single agency could/would be successful at preventing ACEs in the next generation, and that this complex social problem required a community approach. In 2012, the Kitsap Community Foundation (KCF) was awarded a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to focus on inter-generational poverty and KCF mobilized matching funding from both the United Way of Kitsap County and The Suquamish Tribe, who recognized the problem of ACEs and poverty in our community and agreed with the need for a community approach. With in-kind donations of office space and materials from Kitsap Public Health District, Kitsap Strong hired the ACEs and Resiliency Project Director, Kody Russell, in April of 2015. The Kitsap Strong Leadership Committee began meeting in July of 2015 and is continuing to grow and learn with the community.
