Description

The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction and the Washington Geological Survey are teaming up to produce a free workshop that will provide you with a unit of study about the phenomena of earthquakes for middle-schoolers, aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards. By attending this workshop, you will come away with:

  • Lesson Plans that you can teach leading up to “Drop, Cover & Hold” drills on the day of the Great ShakeOut (https://www.shakeout.org/washington/)
  • Connections for these lessons to WA State Science Standards (Next Generation Science Standards) and Common Core Math
  • Extended background information about earthquakes, how they work, how scientists measure them, and a new initiative called ShakeAlert that will provide earthquake early warning
  • Time to meet earth scientists who can support student learning and engagement in geoscience career opportunities with “Meet the Scientist” classroom visits
  • 10 STEM clock hours plus an optional 4 STEM clock hours. The optional 4 hours are available to teachers who pilot session materials with their students and submit student work to demonstrate the experience.
