Effective Debriefing of Flight Teams/Response Staff after a Critical Incident

Effective Debriefing of Flight Teams/Response Staff after a Critical Incident

Description

About the Training:  School populations often suffer losses requiring flight teams to be deployed and safe rooms opened for emotional support of students and staff. Much attention is focused on safely supporting students through the grief process but debriefing of the safe room staff and other adults may be neglected in the intensity of the response. Everyone involved in the response needs an opportunity to put words to the experience, examine their own emotional state, and move toward closure. This training will provide guidance for leading a focused and effective debriefing process for flight teams with an opportunity to practice techniques for unpacking unresolved issues. Sample debriefing scripts will be provided. While this training is focused on debriefing flight teams, we will also touch upon applying the principles to guide the process for school staff.

Course Objectives: As a result of this class, participants will:

1) increase the school or district Flight Team capacity to support impacted students and staff

2) gain understanding and tools to support staff experiencing vicarious trauma

3) evaluate and improve the response process

4) learn ways to identify staff needing additional support.
