Description
The Coaching & Leading for Racial Equity Institute, a program of Puget Sound ESD, offers an historical and cultural context for
understanding how inequity plays out in schools and provides educators with the skills and confidence to lead more
excellent, equitable schools. Participants will learn to recognize structures that perpetuate inequity, address assumptions
about how people learn, and create opportunities for more children to succeed.
PROGRAM DETAILS
In this institute, you will gather with educators from across the region to explore the role of racism in creating and
sustaining educational inequity. You will investigate the importance of personal and group accountability in addressing
inequity, and practices for increasing community engagement and promoting open dialogue. You will return to your site ready
to implement concrete strategies for building a more inclusive school community where all children can achieve at high levels.
OBJECTIVES
Investigate the many causes of individual, institutional, and systemic racial inequity.
Deepen your understanding of why discussions of race, equity, and leadership matter.
Explore the variety of changes needed to create a more inclusive future.
Identify concrete strategies for building inclusive institutions and build your toolkit to teach, model, and practice inclusion.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
- K-12 educators, school and district leaders interested in deepening their understanding of the intersections of race, power, and privilege in our society and schools.
- School-level teams composed of principals, assistant principals, educators and community members.
- District-level, State-level & Regional superintendents, administrators, and staff.
- University & College educators and staff.
Event Notes
This institute will be conducted on Canvas over a period of 3 weeks. There will be 6 synchronous sessions on Zoom with instructors from PSESD and other participants accompanied by work to be completed independently or in partners/small groups by participants. Information on how to set up your Canvas account will be sent to you prior to the first date.

You have the option to secure your registration using a Purchase Order. If you select this method of payment please note you must secure a PO from your business/central office and send it to Allyssa Zillmer (azillmer@psesd.org, or 800 Oakesdale Ave, Renton, WA 98057, ATTN Allyssa Zillmer). POs need to be received prior to the event start. We can accept one PO with multiple attendees in the same district if you would like to coordinate, however this is not required. Registration fees are all-inclusive and do not need tax added. If you need a Puget Sound ESD W-9 form, a copy is attached here: PSESD W-9.pdf
