Engage with city, county, and community experts on a range of focus topics over the course of three, 90-minute Wednesday Webinars as follows: (1) Climate Action Planning, (2) Climate Justice, (3) Transportation and Land Use. Topics Include (1) tracking GHG emissions, setting targets, and prioritizing actions related to city and county climate action policy, plans and performance measures, (2) climate justice principles applied towards equity outcomes at the local level, and (3) green jobs youth pathways, preparing students for an exploding jobs market in the Green-STEM economy.  The webinars will be highly interactive. Teachers will design more relevant and engaging learning pathways for aligning academic standards with local climate action planning. And local government staff and policymakers will be able to identify more accessible, effective, and durable methods for engaging with student and family populations on climate actions needed.  This series is designed as a practicum in problem-based, place-based learning to inspire new approaches for sparking youth voice, agency, and ownership, and new partnerships between schools and local governments.

This engaging and interactive webinar series / PBL Curriculum Design Lab is part of a year-round series on Educating for Sustainability facilitated by Sustainability Ambassadors.

We will be working with Climate Action Teachers Fellows representing eight different school districts from Pierce and King Counties as well as student leaders from the Sustainability Ambassadors training program.

Over the course of the year, we will use science to analyze local climate impacts, technology to explore smart city AI applications, data science and math to calculate GHG emission reductions, and the engineering design process to identify local climate solutions including clean energy, green buildings, electric transportation, materials management, tree canopy, and water conservation innovations. 

We will explore social and climate justice advocacy, civics, economics, and human geography to identify the strongest policy frameworks, and community and market innovations for rapidly advancing a sustainable future that works for all. The Lab is an ongoing practicum that convenes teachers, student leaders, and subject matter experts from industry, government, and nonprofit sectors to ensure a rich learning exchange.
