Description
This book study provides an opportunity for teachers from all content areas to explore the main themes of the book together, including considering connections between climate and outdoor education across content areas and connections to family and culture and their school communities.
We'll dig into the reading and consider the questions: how might you connect this with science topics in your classroom (and how can you frame this content as multidisciplinary)? How might it connect with conversations about civic responsibility? Sustainability? Climate impacts on our communities (and world)? Opportunities for action or advocacy? Connection to places that matter to us?
Educators will explore the text through the guide written by the author of Braiding Sweetgrass, Robin Wall Kimmerer, and utilize the time and support to build community and make connections that will support them back in their own contexts.
A goal of the book study is to increase educator awareness of the role climate and science education plays in providing an equitable learning experience to all students in all content areas K-12 and to provide educators with resources to better understand accurate and current climate science and how climate change is impacting different areas of Washington State.
Event Notes
Educators must acquire a copy of the book Braiding Sweetgrass. The audiobook is a useful tool, however it will be more helpful to have the text version to refer to during sessions. The young adult version of Braiding Sweetgrass will be referenced, but is optional (and doesn't include all the same passages).
Cameras MUST be on during sessions to verify attendance. Participants should plan to join from a laptop or tablet as a phone doesn't provide the necessary tools/options to participate in group discussions.
