Description

Reading fluency supports comprehension by helping readers recognize words accurately and increasingly automatically while maintaining attention to meaning. Fluency includes accuracy, appropriate rate, and prosody; it is more than reading quickly.

This self-paced, asynchronous course equips educators with foundational knowledge and practical strategies for strengthening fluency and comprehension across elementary and secondary classrooms. Participants will examine how fluency develops, how it supports meaning-making, and how educators can recognize and respond to students' differing instructional needs.

Through research-aligned instructional routines, assessment practices, classroom examples, and application tasks, educators will explore modeling, repeated reading, supported oral reading, and purposeful practice. Participants will also examine supports that can be used before, during, and after reading to increase access to complex, grade-level text while maintaining meaningful engagement and cognitive demand.

Learning can be applied across grade levels and content areas, supporting educators in making evidence-informed decisions about fluency and comprehension instruction.
