Description
This fully asynchronous course is a book study of the 2016 book The Mechanical Horse: How the Bicycle Reshaped American Life by Margaret Guroff. The book looks at the history of the bicycle, how bicycle technology evolved, and how it influenced daily life in the U.S., including through empowerment of women and development of the car. A fun read, the book may be of particular interest to educators who teach Physical Education, History, Science, and Technology. Participants will work at their own pace on Canvas to submit pre-reading assignments, guided reading questions, and a final reflection where they explore resources for integrating bicycle knowledge into educational setting. Completion of this course offers an opportunity to purchase 15 clock hours in STEM. NWESD 189 is a state approved clock hour provider and clock hours can be used for certificate renewal in Washington State.

The book is available for purchase as a paperback or hardcopy through the following book sellers or libraries may have the book available to check out:
Deadline: Participants must complete this session in Canvas by December 31, 2026. Course attendance is taken on an on-going basis after participants finish, often within 3-5 days, though during rush periods and holiday breaks please be aware it may take up to 2 weeks.
