This fully asynchronous course is a study of current events relating to libraries, including efforts to ban books in school libraries, and the ways in which school librarians are responding to those events. Participants will view the 2026 PBS Documentary "The Librarians," directed by Kim Snyder, and read the 2024 book That Librarian: The Fight Against Book Banning in America by Louisiana librarian Amanda Jones. Both the book and the film offer insight into how librarians and educators across the country are navigating debates over censorship, student and educator rights, and book banning. Participants will work at their own pace on Canvas to submit pre-reading assignments, guided reading and film questions, and a final reflection where they explore library related resources. Completion of this course offers an opportunity to purchase 25 clock hours in Equity or Educational Leadership. NWESD 189 is a state approved clock hour provider and clock hours can be used for certificate renewal in Washington State.

Deadline:  Participants must complete this session in Canvas by December 31, 2026. Course attendance is taken on an on-going basis after participants finish, often within 3-5 days, though during rush periods and holiday breaks please be aware it may take up to 2 weeks.
