The English Language Learner (ELL) Subject Matter Certificate is an advanced online professional learning course designed for paraeducators who support English language learners (multilingual learners) in Washington's schools. Aligned with the Washington State ELL Subject Matter Certificate Standards of Practice, this course builds the knowledge and practical skills needed to effectively support English language development and student success. Topics include the legal rights of English language learners, cultural competence and responsiveness, effective communication with students and families, language acquisition, and evidence-based instructional strategies that foster equitable and inclusive learning environments.

Successful completion of this course fulfills the 20 Hour professional learning requirement for earning the Washington State ELL Subject Matter Certificate.

This course is hosted by Professional Learning US (PLUS) on behalf of the Washington State Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB).
