Description
Building conceptual understanding around number sense is one of the most difficult but necessary pieces for students to become successful in mathematics. Research has shown that students with a strong number sense have a much higher success rate when it comes to understanding mathematical content, especially in algebra. Mathematical Discourse (Number Talks) is a way to provide students the opportunity in a safe environment to express their own mathematical reasoning and learning from the viable arguments of others (SMP3). In this course participants will explore the power of Mathematical Discourse (Number Talks) and how to incorporate them as a daily routine in their classroom. Participants will learn as a student first and see the power in discourse and then switch hats and plan as an educator, leaving with a plan to start their students off using Mathematical Discourse when they get back to their classroom.
