Description
This workshop will focus on building school and staff capacity to support those students presenting with the most challenging behavioral concerns. Research suggests that understanding the function of student problem behavior (including functional behavior assessment (FBA)) is the most effective and efficient way to identify behavior intervention plans (BIP), however many schools struggle with implementation. This workshop will review common challenges that school face in implementing Tier 3 behavior support for students and provide suggestions, strategies and tools for implementing function-based intervention across tiers within an MTSS framework. The logic of Basic FBA to BIP will be presented along with an overview of implementation features from conducting an FBA to developing, implementing and evaluating the BIP. Free on-line training modules will be introduced for training (a) behavior specialists how to conduct FBA/BIP and (b) all school staff in basics of understanding behavior and function-based intervention. Training all staff will increase their capacity to understand and implement behavioral interventions at the first signs of recurring student challenges and will also provide a common language and lens for increasing staff participation and efficiency in the FBA to BIP process. Lastly, suggestions will be provided to maximize training and implementation efforts in schools and school districts.
