    Safety Summit attendees, Due to local weather issues and the expected increase of snow this evening and tomorrow, we are sad to announce the cancellation of our School Safety Summit. Attendees who have paid for this event will be fully reimbursed. Regardless of payment method, refunds will be issued in the form of a warrant mailed to the address on file. Please allow three weeks for processing. We are currently planning for an October 2020 School Safety Summit (dates yet TBD). We will send an update as we have confirmation. The NWESD’s annual two-day School Safety Summit will provide impactful content related to active shooters and violence prevention, issues of student discipline and related policies, comprehensive school safety planning, reunification, student threat assessment, student vaping, trafficking, cyberbullying and sexting, bullying, youth-oriented domestic violence (DV), drugs and current trends, and much more. With an impressive line-up of key-note speakers and breakout presenters, attendees will be able to pick and choose from a variety of relevant breakout sessions.

 Keynote Speakers:

Day 1:  Former FBI Special Agent Andre Simons, speaking on "Targeted Violence and Schools: The Challenges, the Decade Ahead, and the Cause for Hope"

Andre Simons is a director within Control Risks’ Crisis and Security consulting practice for North America, based in Washington, D.C. Andre focuses on issues of active shooters and workplace violence prevention within corporate and educational communities, specializing in providing assessments and management strategies to clients navigating the spectrum of potentially violent threat actors. 

Andre collaborates with key stakeholders—including executive management, security, legal, and human resources—to develop creative strategies to protect organizations and schools. Andre recently retired from the FBI after nearly 23 years of service as a special agent and manager. He spent over 12 years in the FBI’s behavioral threat assessment program within the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) in Quantico, VA. As a Certified Threat Manager™, Andre is recognized across the public and private sector as a leading subject matter expert in mass casualty prevention and response as well as communicated threat analysis.

Day 2: White Hatter - Darren Laur presenting "What are Students and Educators Doing Online"

Darren has dedicated his life to public safety, has over 30 years of law enforcement experience, and is a recently retired and highly respected Staff Sergeant with the Victoria City Police Department in British Columbia, Canada. Darren holds six separate certifications in Open Source Intelligence collection and online investigational techniques and is one of only a few civilian provincially licensed and certified advanced online open source intelligence and social media investigators in British Columbia. He is an internationally court recognized safety and violence prevention expert, award-winning published author, and a highly sought-after international keynote speaker specializing in personal safety and self-protection both online and offline. Darren helped to launch a very successful use of a social media initiative for the purpose of crowdsourcing event safety, and police call response for the 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 Canada Day celebrations in Victoria British Columbia; the first use of its kind in North American policing. Darren is a trusted and respected online safety and security resource to students, parents, businesses, government, schools, school districts and law enforcement throughout North America.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations received at least two business days prior to course start date are eligible to receive a full refund less a $20 administrative fee. Cancellations must be received in writing by e-mail, fax, or U.S. mail prior to the stated deadline.

Cancellations received after the stated deadline will forfeit the full registration fee. Refunds will not be available for registrants who choose not to attend a class. If the registration fee is $20 or less, the fee is forfeited if attendance is canceled. As a courtesy to the facilitator, written notice of intent not to attend is appreciated.

Regardless of payment method, refunds will be issued in the form of a warrant mailed to the address on file. Please allow three weeks for processing.

NWESD reserves the right to cancel a course due to low enrollment, inclement weather, or other circumstances that would make the course non-viable. If NWESD cancels a course, registrants will be notified within 48 hours of the first class date and offered a full refund or the option to transfer registration to another course.
