Event Notes
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process of developing and applying the skills, attitudes, behavior and knowledge that afford individuals the opportunity to identify and regulate emotions and behaviors, form meaningful relationships, and make responsible decisions. In other words, SEL is comprised of a set of strategies that support individual’s ability to develop and apply a set of foundational skills one needs to be successful in school, work, and life. To begin to effectively implement SEL practices, educators should understand the social and emotional competencies and skills included within the Washington SEL standards and benchmarks, and begin to identify ways to integrate these standards and benchmarks in a culturally responsive manner.
Objectives:
Analysis of Past Instruction. Successfully identify teaching activities and student work that is based on social and emotional learning
Analysis of Current Knowledge. Identifies knowledge gaps between what thought was known about SEL and what the competencies are in a culturally responsive manner
SEL Standard and Benchmarks. Clearly explains how each part of the lesson asks students to demonstrate a targeted SEL Standard and Benchmark.
Formative assessment aligned to the SEL Standard and Benchmark. Clearly articulates how progress in the targeted SEL Standard and Benchmark is formatively assessed.
Instruction Captured SEL Standard and Benchmark. Instruction effectively incorporated the targeted SEL Standard and Benchmark in a culturally responsive manner, as demonstrated by students using the competency during instruction and being aware of the competency they were using.
