Rigor and Creativity in the Classroom: Tools and Strategies to Integrate Depth and Ingenuity

This one-day course, split into two separate three-hour segments, is the first in the 2018-19 series on meeting the needs of learners who are ready for depth and rigor beyond their peers. 

Districts that are members of the Capital Region ESD 113 Highly Capable Partnership are entitled to five complimentary seats at this event.

Designed for educators who want to expand their knowledge and skills in how to differentiate when students are ready to “go above and beyond,” the course is divided into two parts:

1) Rigor, Depth and Complexity: OH MY!

Learn ways to engage and empower students in their work through Sandra Kaplan’s Depth and Complexity Framework.  We will explore eight of the tools that help students to think and discuss at deeper levels through inquiry.  When students begin to use these tools, they begin to approach content as an expert, or disciplinarian in the field, increasing rigor and engagement with tasks.  In this session, you will learn about the tools and develop questions and frameworks to share with students. (Presented by Jen Flo. Jen is a board member of WAETAG, the Washington Association of Educators of the Talented and Gifted. She is the ESD 113 Program Coordinator for Highly Capable and the ESD 113 HiCap Partnership. Jen brings knowledge from years as a classroom teacher, director, and consultant in matters related to advanced learners.)

2) Creative Thinking and Problem-Solving across Content Areas

Teachers will be introduced to strategies to promote creative thinking & problem-solving in their classrooms, including S.C.A.M.P.E.R, analogizing, constraint vs. elaboration, design-thinking, Maker Space, and more. Teachers will be provided with background on each technique and experience different ways they could implement each in their classrooms.  Participants will leave with their own examples and templates for developing their own rigorous activities and ideas for how these strategies can be used for any grade level and subject area. (Presented by April Drake. April brings fifteen years of teaching experience in the K-12 gifted, cluster grouped, and general education classrooms in North Carolina and Washington. Most of that time has been with 3rd-8th graders. Her passions are creativity, problem-solving, and project-based learning.)
