The Power of Student Reflection in Mathematics

Administered by NWESD

  • Mary Ellen Huggins
  • Tina Mott

When mathematics students engage in reflection, they have an opportunity to articulate their thinking and show evidence of their current understanding; in other words they behave as a mathematician. In this course, participants will identify the timing and purposes for reflection, view a progression of teacher prompts and student responses and discuss next steps for teachers and students. Educators will experience rich mathematical tasks, number routines and sense-making activities and choose appropriate reflection protocols to maximize student understanding.  After session one participants will be asked to use the reflection strategies with their students so they can share their findings at session two.
