Description

Did you know that 90% of the world's data has been created in the last few years? Everywhere we look data is telling us stories about our world.  We need a common understanding of Data Science including what should be taught and how digging into data can be easily embedded into Washington State Learning Standards. We will begin exploring some learning experiences focused on Data Science within the K-2 grade band.

If we want to empower students to be critical consumers in our data-driven world they will need to have experiences with relevant data embedded in their learning!  Join us as we examine the important ideas of Number Sense, Science, and Data Exploration in math tasks highlighting strategies for distance and in-person learning.

This 15-STEM Clock Hour class will utilize a range of developmentally appropriate data (climate/environmental data and other science data) as the context for authentic real-world science and math learning for primary students.

Program Objectives

Participants will experience and practice strategies using technology to provide students with effective and engaging learning aligned to math and science content and practice standards.

Participants will be provided with linked resources that can be used by participants and students.

Participants will experience STEM by the Numbers for Washington State: by region and by ESD. This work will highlight STEM careers and pathways.
