Description
This series of six free Zoom sessions is open to any K–12 educator who wants to expand their understanding of media literacy to include critical thinking about the role of AI. Each session will feature a presentation by an expert in the field, each with their own perspective on the topic. The sessions will include practical explorations of free, ready-to-use classroom resources as well as more philosophical considerations of AI’s impact on media literacy.
Educators are welcome but NOT REQUIRED to attend all six sessions. Free clock hours will be awarded based on the number of sessions actually attended, whether participants attend all six sessions or not. Sessions will not be recorded.
Agenda
June 16, 4:30–5:30 pm
Alana Winnick will lead a session that will guide participants to focus on identifying and addressing bias and misinformation in AI-generated content. Participants will critically assess AI content and develop media literacy, empowering them to promote inclusivity and fairness in their classrooms and beyond.
June 17, 4:30–5:30 pm
Erin Olson will lead a session that will explore the free, ready-to-use classroom resources offered by the News Literacy Project that engage students in thinking critically about AI in the context of news literacy.
June 18, 4:30–5:30 pm
Faith Rogow will lead a session that encourages educators to consider what’s necessary when it comes to the use of AI tools by our youngest students, not just what’s possible. Fatih will apply the media literacy philosophy expressed throughout her book, Media Literacy for Young Children, to AI.
June 23, 4:30–5:30 pm
Alana Winnick will lead a session that will support participants in sharpening their focus on AI literacy and the critical assessment of misinformation in AI-generated content. This session will equip educators with strategies for helping students assess AI content for credibility and navigate its ethical challenges.
June 24, 4:30–5:30 pm
Jamie Nunez will lead a session that will explore the free, ready-to-use classroom resources offered by Common Sense Education that engage students in thinking critically about AI in the contexts of media literacy and digital citizenship. Jamie will also share examples of how teachers are using these resources with their students.
June 25, 4:30–5:30 pm
Kristen Mattson will lead a session that will offer practical, content-specific strategies for seamlessly integrating AI ethics into science, social studies, English, and math—without adding to teachers’ workloads. Participants will gain ready-to-use discussion prompts, bellringers, and lesson ideas to make AI ethics engaging, relevant, and manageable.
