Does your definition of Math Fluency include Fast? Accurate?
In this professional learning, we’ll rethink fluency to focus on what really matters—flexibility, efficiency, and strategic thinking. Together, we’ll explore powerful strategies that help students make sense of numbers across all operations and number sets, from whole numbers to fractions and algebraic expressions. You’ll engage in hands-on games, routines, and classroom-ready tools that not only support fluency but also build student confidence, math identity, and equitable access to learning.
While math fluency often begins in the early grades, this learning is relevant for all educators—elementary through high school. We’ll explore how fluency strategies develop in younger learners and how those same strategies connect to more advanced math concepts for older students. You’ll leave with practical tools to support all learners and a deeper understanding that fluency is about more than flashcards—it’s about helping students think flexibly and confidently with numbers.
This PD series begins with an in-person session and continues with two follow-up Zoom sessions to support classroom implementation and extend learning.
Our work is grounded in Figuring Out Fluency by Jennifer Bay-Williams and the supporting companion books. Participants are strongly encouraged to obtain their own copy of Figuring Out Fluency and may wish to explore the companion books to extend their learning. These are optional but highly recommended.
