Description

Join UW Professor Dr. Nancy Hertzog, Ph.D., and Jody Hess, OSPI Program Supervisor, for this opportunity to learn about and share successful use of Project-Based Learning.

This two half-day virtual workshop is designed for coordinators, administrators and teachers of all grade levels to learn together.  For decades, the field of gifted education has pursued equity by manipulating identification protocols to provide more access for all students to enter programs and services that provide enhanced and accelerated instruction. But, as a field, we have not focused on the relationship of the assessment data to the services that are provided to students who qualify.

This workshop is designed to shift our narrative . . . from not how we get more students in our program from what has been termed populations furthest from educational justice to how do we serve all our students, including those who have been traditionally underserved, if they need enhanced and accelerated instruction.

We encourage administrators and teachers across the state to share how they are matching their assessment data with the services that they design for their advanced students. Virtual break out rooms will provide opportunities for educators across WA to talk together about their policies, practices and services. We know designing services for advanced students varies greatly by size, location, and communities of school districts. This session is particularly designed so that we learn from one another.

On Day 2, there will be a particular focus on how teachers in general education classrooms can differentiate instruction for their identified students who need enhanced and accelerated instruction. If teachers have strategies that they feel are successful, we encourage them to share their work and ideas. We know that most of our students who require enhanced and accelerated instruction spend most of their time in general education classrooms.
