Description

This hybrid course explores the connections between science, engineering, and literacy through Braiding Sweetgrass (Young Adult Edition), a narrative nonfiction text that weaves together ecological science, Indigenous knowledge, and personal reflection. Through story and lived experience, the text invites educators to examine scientific understanding as relational, place based, and grounded in Earth systems.

Through a combination of live Zoom sessions and flexible asynchronous learning, participants will use the Engage, Analyze, Empower framework to support sense making in science, engineering, and literacy instruction. The course emphasizes climate science concepts, Earth systems, ethical decision making, reciprocity, and responsibility, while honoring multiple ways of knowing and meaning making.

In the asynchronous modules, participants will read, reflect, and engage in discussion as they consider how science and engineering function as literacy rich, human centered disciplines. The Young Adult Edition of Braiding Sweetgrass is accessible for students in grades 3 and above, and course applications are designed to be adaptable across grade levels and teaching contexts.

Enrollment is limited to 25 participants. Each enrolled participant will receive a free copy of Braiding Sweetgrass (Young Adult Edition) to use during the course.
