Threat Assessment and Neurodivergence
Threat Assessment and Neurodivergence
A Supplemental Training for Threat Assessment Teams
Administered by ESD 113
Presenters
- Alexandra Fiola
Description
This one‑hour presentation is designed for school administrators and threat assessment team members who have completed Level 1 and/or Level 2 Threat Assessment training and are seeking deeper understanding to support effective, equitable decision‑making.
The session will explore how neurodivergence can influence behavior, communication, emotional regulation, and how these factors can be thoughtfully considered during the threat assessment process. Participants will be encouraged to reframe behaviors through a neurodivergence‑informed lens while maintaining the integrity and purpose of threat assessment.
This training is not a replacement for foundational threat assessment training, but a supplemental learning opportunity intended to strengthen practice, reduce misinterpretation of behavior, and support more nuanced team discussions.
Participants will leave with:
- An understanding of how neurodivergence can shape behavior and communication, and the ability to pause and reframe concerning behaviors through a neurodivergent‑ and trauma‑informed lens
- Greater clarity in distinguishing dysregulation or unmet need from indicators of movement toward targeted harm, supporting more accurate threat assessment discussions
- Increased awareness of common misreads and bias‑driven assumptions, and the ability to slow down decision‑making to focus on patterns, context, and situational variables
- A strengthened foundation for asking reflective, context‑focused questions within existing Level 1 and Level 2 threat assessment processes—while maintaining fidelity to protocol
This session is ideal for teams looking to enhance their understanding, ask reflective questions, and build confidence in responding to complex situations involving neurodivergent students.
