Description

Unlocking Academic Words: Morphology for Secondary Classrooms is a four-session online professional learning series for educators in grades 6–12. Designed for interactive virtual learning, this course builds educator understanding of how English word structure (morphemes) supports vocabulary development, reading comprehension, spelling, and access to complex academic texts across content areas.
Participants engage in focused instruction; guided word analysis; breakout-room collaboration; and applied planning to learn how morphology makes meaning visible for students. Educators will explore the instructional difference between syllables and morphemes and practice practical, repeatable routines—such as word sums and word matrices—that can be embedded into existing instruction. The course emphasizes explicit instruction, student independence, and equitable access to academic language in secondary classrooms.
