Description
With the newly released WA Math 2025 (initially adopted standards for mathematics) we need to once again consider the data we collect and its impact on teaching and learning in classrooms. We're collecting data about learning mathematics all the time, and we have to ask ourselves, "What is changing for the learners"? Is there a positive impact on student learning?
In these two one-hours sessions participants will be introduced to the Universal Screeners for Number Sense (USNS) and the Fractional Reasoning Screener (FRS). It is important that we know what students know, and importantly to know how they understand the math they are learning!
Participants will understand how the screeners are the same and differ from other widely used assessments. Further, participants will consider how the results from the USNS and FRS can be leveraged to fuel instruction and PLCs thus elevating meaningful assessment data, deepening understanding of student learning, and clearly and precisly communicating student learning.
Part 1
Provide teachers and leaders with a comprehensive overview of the Universal Screeners for Number Sense
History and theory of development
Purposes and uses
Assessment as professional learning
Collaborative practices (MTSS, RtI, PLCs, etc)
Parts and components of the USNS (what is in that 450 page doc?)
The Number Sense Lens (What are we assessing and why?)
Noticing thinking as an assessment practice (watching videos and discussing what we learn through these interviews.)
Asset-based assessment practices
Fluency - and the assessment of fluency
Part 2
Homework Assignment (optional, 1 hr.)
- Administer a number sense screener to at least 3 students and submit reflection responses via Google form
Part 3
Provide leaders and teachers with an understanding of how Forefront supports schools and districts to implement the USNS and Fractional Reasoning Screeners
Why “universal” screeners? What are the Fractional Reasoning Screeners?
Understanding the effectiveness of Tier 1 and strategies for improving Tier 1
A basic introduction to Forefront - features and content
The Next Steps for instruction - considering instructional responses to USNS assessment results and how these can be used in the classroom
Using dashboards to support focused and efficient collaborative work
Using Forefront to monitor progress
The big picture - meaningful assessments - powerful reporting
