School Nurse Day 2026

Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Events (PNES)

Wed, May 6 2026 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Administered by OSPI

Description

Functional Seizures in the School Setting Functional Seizures (FS) or Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Events (PNEE) are a common form of Functional Neurological Disorder (FND). PNEE has the highest prevalence in teenagers, estimated to be about 60 in 100,000 in ages 15-19. Teenagers diagnosed with PNEE report a lower quality of life than their peers, including impairment in mood, withdrawal from social activities, and difficulties with school attendance. Further, return to normal activities, including school, sports, social activities, and other extracurricular activities is well-documented to be a critical component of successful treatment of PNEE. Despite this, common themes reported by school nurses related to PNEE include lack of awareness surrounding diagnosis, inadequate information about the diagnosis, and feelings of doubt and insecurity related to management of events in a school setting. As such, the goal of this presentation is to increase understanding of diagnosis and increase confidence in management of PNEE in the school setting.
