Description
The Human Edge: Practical Pedagogy to Navigate the AI Era (For AI Fans, AI Skeptics, and Everyone In Between)
AI tools are everywhere. Whether you think AI is going to be the downfall of civilization or you think that AI is going to bring about revolutionary benefits for all of humanity (or if you are somewhere in between), we all have to figure out how to best navigate this reality.
This course is designed to help each participant construct answers to these questions:
How can I design my learning environment and tasks so that both I and my learners avoid the potential pitfalls of AI mis-use?
How can I (and possibly my learners) leverage AI and use it in ways that support critical thinking and deep learning?
We will focus on student-centered learning strategies, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and time-tested pedagogical ideas. While we will discuss a variety of AI tools and environments, this is not a training about a specific AI tool.
This course is designed to be fully participatory and includes two required live Zoom sessions in addition to asynchronous work on Canvas. Active engagement is an essential part of the learning experience. To support meaningful interaction, participants should plan to join live Zoom sessions using a computer (not a phone) with speakers, a camera, and a microphone. No AI assistants or AI notetakers will be admitted to the Live Sessions.
